What You Will Do

I. General Summary

At UMMS, the UI/UX designer will join our dynamic i Harbor (Center for Innovation) team and will be responsible for the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design of our various software and digital assets. The successful candidate will ensure that all elements of the user experience incorporate exceptional visual design and are optimized for improved usability and usefulness, and ensure design elements provide a consistent experience for end-users throughout all team projects and our various technology assets. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for delivering adaptive and creative solutions to UI/UX design problems by guiding and mentoring team members on applying industry best practices and emerging trends in user experience design and user interface technology.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

Investigates user experience design requirements for our suite of software and technology assets. Synthesizes requirements across the team to create an overall design strategy.

Develop and conceptualize a comprehensive UI/UX design strategy for software and technology products and solutions across assets and applications.

Lead the design of UI elements and tools such as navigation menus, search boxes, tabs, and widgets for our software and digital assets, ensuring all elements designed by the team present a common and cohesive look and feel.

Lead the design of graphic user interface elements, like menus, tabs and widgets, , ensuring all elements designed by the team present a common and cohesive look and feel.

Serve as a producer for UI, working alongside project management to ensure positive communication and problem solving between disciplines.

Mentor staff UI-UX designers on best practices and on achieving high quality designs/layouts.

Mentor staff on utilization and adoption of new technologies.

Produce high-quality UX design solutions through wireframes, visual and graphic designs, flow diagrams, storyboards, site maps, and prototypes.

Prepare and present rough drafts to internal teams and key stakeholders

Illustrate design ideas using storyboards, process flows and sitemaps.

Develop UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how applications may function and be consumed.

Test UI elements such as Call To Action (CTA) buttons, banners, page layouts, page designs, page flows, and target links for landing pages.

Collaborate with the technology and development teams, and internal and external stakeholders to ensure the creation and delivery of tailored experiences for the users across applications.

Advise and guide the implementation of UX research methodologies and testing activities in order to analyze and predict user behavior.

Adhere to style standards on typography, graphic design, colors, and images.

Work with developers and engineers to brainstorm application ideas.

Conduct layout adjustments based on user feedback.

Identify and troubleshoot UX problems (e.g. responsiveness).

What You Need To Be Successful

III. Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Media Arts, or a closely related field. Master’s degree in Graphic Design, Media Arts, or a closely related field preferred.

5+ years UI/UX design industry experience for software and technology products or services to include:

A working knowledge of the following technologies and software: Sketch, InVision, Visio, HTML, CSS (SCSS), iOS, Android, Design Systems, and Adobe Creative Suite. Equivalent technologies and software are acceptable.

Demonstrated understanding of software and technologies deemed relevant to machine learning, artificial intelligence, operations research, pattern mining, natural language processing, statistics, etc.

A portfolio of professional UI/UX design work for software applications and web and mobile platforms.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Ability to manage competing priorities.

Detail Oriented

Excellent problem solving, creative thinking, communication, and presentation skills, including ability to discuss and present design options.
