The Research Associate will conduct a statistical analysis of existing commercial fishery observer and commercial fishery discard logbook data from the US1-on-1 mentorship, training and advice to help users land their next job. The data will be provided by Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC) personnel The analysis is to be completed in the R statistical software program Familiarity with fisheries data collection and analysis will be required to understand and properly account for reporting issues in the datasets

The data analysis will investigate data structure, patterns and identify potential outliers from each respective dataset The Research Associate will produce complete annual time series estimates of commercial discards of red snapper and associated uncertainty levels Results from both observer and logbook data should be compared and contrasted to understand potential biases in estimates of discards derived from each data source

All analyses should be documented and coded scripts provided for repeatability of the analyses A final report suitable for publication as a Technical Memorandum or SEFSC scientific report should be written to document the methods, results, and conclusions Presentations (eg MS Powerpoint) of results may be necessary to help explain the results to scientists and managers

A laptop computer and access to the data will be provided by SEFSC The Research Associate will need to obtain an approved non-disclosure agreement for access to confidential data Program Description: The NOAA Fisheries Economics & Human Dimensions Program conducts data collection, assessment and research to evaluate the benefits and costs of alternative management actions, to prioritize management needs, and to facilitate policy design that sustainably maximizes societal benefits from ocean and coastal resources

Important functions of the Program include, but are not limited to, monitoring status and trends in performance of the commercial and recreational fishing sectors, including assessing regional economic impacts (sales, value-added and job impacts), analyzing critical fishery management issues (such as evaluating the economic performance of catch share programs), assessing marine spatial management options, and assessing protected species bycatch reduction strategies Objective and Tasks/Deliverables: Analyze data, write and edit technical documentation, develop data processing programs and analyze in R, format reports, proof-read, and present findings Results of analysis of existing commercial fishery observer and commercial fishery discard logbook data from the US South Atlantic region

Complete annual time series estimates of commercial discards of red snapper and associated uncertainty levels Documentation of analyses and coded scripts A final report suitable for publication as a Technical Memorandum or SEFSC scientific report documenting the methods, results, and conclusions

Location Note: Silver Spring, MD, but Remote work/telework will also be considered Required Skills: Bachelor’s degree in fisheries science or related environmental science Experience conducting statistical analysis of data in R, including statistical analysis of medium to large data sets, and formatting results in reports and presentations

Experience with R statistical software or other statistical software, MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and Adobe Acrobat Familiarity with fisheries data collection and analysis Excellent organizational skills
