• Chewy is looking for a Staff Machine Learning engineer to join a science driven team in supply chain charged with delivering state-of-art ML models helping all pet parents and people.
• In this role, you will lead development and deployment of our critical Machine learning and deep learning models, which includes guiding data scientists, platform engineers in the delivery of the models.
• This role will involve execution, strategy, partnership, architecture, mentoring, and more.

• Ideate and implement advanced ML solutions like domain-specific embeddings, custom featurization, and customized algorithms.
• Build a great company-wide ML platform that enables other data scientists and ML engineers to train, validate, deploy, and monitor ML
• Mentor teammates in advanced ML and ML engineering practices
• Engage with engineering leadership across Chewy to define development and production processes for ML creation and deployment.
• Recommend architectural patterns; e.g., consult on the architectural design of ML pipelines for collecting data for ML training and inference.
• Collaborate with a distributed team, including pairing, code reviews, identifying opportunities for code refactoring, and defining best practices.
• 8+ years of recent professional industry experience in data science/software engineering
• 6+ years writing production-level, scalable code (e.g. Python, Scala)
• Expertise in machine learning/Deep Learning and statistical modeling
• Excited to answer product/engineering questions with data
• Strong communication and collaboration skills
• Ability to write technical papers and present results to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Experience designing and conducting complex projects
• Ph. D. (preferred) or M.S. in a quantitative field (e.g., Quantitative Social Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Machine Learning)
• Are familiar with recent developments in deep learning & machine learning, especially in time series, anomaly detection, NLP, explainability and interpretability, and the intersection thereof
• Have full stack experience in data collection, aggregation, analysis, visualization, productionization, and monitoring of data science products

Data Scientist, Natural Language Processing with experience in NLP/NLU and search relevance. Chewy’s SEO organization is a team of product managers, engineers, analysts, and data scientists responsible for acquiring new customers and revenue through the organic results of search engines like Google and Bing. Our goal is to make it easy for our customers to discover Chewy when conducting a search by delivering a world-class customer experience in a way that search engine crawlers can understand. You will play a pivotal role in building new natural language processing models to power new product features across Chewy.com to help our customers make better purchasing decisions.
What You’ll Do
• Apply your NLP expertise to propose and develop models and solutions to build ML-driven products.
• Be responsible for the full Data Science lifecycle from conception to prototyping, testing, deploying, and measuring the overall business value of the models.
• Conduct exploratory analysis on large sets of text data (search queries, product reviews, product descriptions, etc.) and make recommendations to identify customer problems and inform new product features.
• Devise models and algorithms and guide engineering to develop scalable solutions that can work in real-time with large amounts of data.
• Identify and manage priorities within the context of overall Chewy objectives, and work with colleagues in data science and engineering to drive the best practices in development, testing, and production of models at scale.
• Establish strong working relationship at all organizational levels across different functional teams.
• Work with the data engineering teams to develop the automated pipelines to perform different stages of the model life cycle.

What You’ll Need
• Bachelors’ degree with 5+ years’, Master’s degree with 3+ years or PhD 2+ years of relevant experience ideally in natural language processing/natural language understanding, or information retrieval.
• Graduate degree (MS or PhD) in Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or related discipline.
• Experience in building and shipping machine learning models for business applications at scale.
• Strong skills with Python as well as experience with NLTK, spaCy, and other NLP libraries.
• Experience with cutting edge technologies in natural language processing such as BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers), ELMo (Embeddings from Language Models), or GPT-3.
• Experience with deep learning software platforms, such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with distributed machine learning and deploying models at scale in cloud environments such as AWS or Google Cloud Platform.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to explain details of complex concepts to non-expert stakeholders in a simple understandable way.
• You enjoy working on a team of highly engaged individuals, have a passion for data science and KPIs, and want to work on the cutting edge of your field.
• Proven experience in identifying opportunities for business improvement and defining and measuring the success of those initiatives.

The Natural Language Processing (NLP) Signals team is part of Cortex, the central machine learning organization at Twitter.

Cortex’s mission is to empower internal teams to efficiently leverage machine learning by providing the platform, modeling, and research expertise while advancing the ML technologies within Twitter.

We tackle Twitter-specific challenges in the NLP domain such as the real-time, ever-changing nature of our data and limited context.

We apply and advance state of the art natural language processing techniques to invent new models and systems that can be used to improve various Twitter experiences for our customers.

We encourage publishing papers while focusing on solving real-world problems that improve Twitter for our customers. We operate at scale whilst ensuring fair and ethical use of our models and data.

What You’ll Do :

Apply your NLP expertise to propose and develop models and solutions that improve our ML-driven products. Devise models and algorithms and guide engineering to develop scalable solutions that can work real-time with large amounts of data.

Help us develop novel solutions, and unlock new directions. You’ll collaborate with product teams, mentor them on best practices for modern NLP, and keep the wider team informed on the state of the art.

In addition, you will be in a strategic position to influence future roadmaps for NLP-driven products. You will engage with the research community via publications, workshops, and tutorials.

Who you are :

You have an in-depth knowledge and research experience in NLP that you have applied to solve real-world problems in the industry.

You are passionate about state-of-the-art technologies and are excited by the application of theory to real-world problems.

You keep up to date with the latest developments in the field and look for ways to apply them to your current work / role.

You find pragmatic solutions that solve problems in a timely manner.

Qualifications

PhD in Computer Science or Machine Learning related degree with a focus on NLP or ML; or a graduate degree with a strong publication record, or equivalent work experience in the field

5+ years NLP applied research experience, preferably experience applying NLP research to real-world problems in the industry

One or more peer-reviewed publications in the major NLP / ML conferences, such as ACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, InterSpeech, CVPR, etc

Experience in building production ML models and understanding of inference challenges at scale

Good theoretical grounding in core machine learning concepts and techniques

Ability to perform comprehensive literature reviews and provide critical feedback on state-of-the-art solutions and how they may fit to different operating constraints

Experience with a number of ML techniques and frameworks, e.g., data discretization, normalization, sampling, deep neural networks, sequence modeling with transformers, etc.

Familiarity with one or more deep learning software frameworks such as Tensorflow, PyTorch

For staff level only :

Experience solving complex problems which have significant technical or business ambiguity and multiple stakeholders

Evidence of leading teams delivering innovative solutions with significant business and research impact

Bonus Points

Familiarity with Airflow, TFX, and Kubeflow, Kubernetes, and GCP
