The role:

Join the data engineering team and help make an impact on Sojern’s bottom line. Each engineer in the team owns highly visible revenue producing features of our Sojern Travel Platform. You will be responsible for taking new features from inception to execution in partnership with Product, Data Science, SRE and Ops teams. We are looking for engineers who are quick learners and are not afraid of multiple deployments in a day (except for Friday!)

We are open to fully remote candidates for this role, with a preference towards candidates located near or within the San Francisco, CA metro area, where candidates would have the option to work remote or hybrid.

Responsibilities:
• Design high performance, low latency systems and lead the development of them.
• We follow agile practices and advocate for improvements in code and culture. We expect you to be able to do the same.
• Deal with complex systems while helping the rest of the team navigate ambiguity in requirements

What you bring to the table:
• A Bachelor’s degree and 4 years or a Master’s degree and 2 years of experience or a PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field
• Proficient in SQL: constructing tables, normalization/denormalization techniques, query optimization
• Familiarity with columnar databases (e.g. Google BigQuery, Amazon RedShift)
• Excellent grasp of CS fundamentals – data structures and algorithms.
• Production experience in one or more of: Go, Python.
• Experience with Distributed Systems.
• Experience with REST, gRPC, and/or GraphQL APIs–consumption and creation.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform or Amazon Web Services infrastructure

What You’ll Do
• Work between our engineering organization and stakeholders from our data science, growth, sales, marketing, and product teams, to understand the data needs of the business and produce pipelines, data marts and other data solutions that enable better product and growth decision-making.
• Design and update our foundational business tables in order to simplify analysis across the entire company.
• Continue to improve the performance and reliability of our data-warehouse.
• Build and enforce a pattern language across our data stack, ensuring that our event taxonomy and tables are consistent, accurate, and well-understood.
Who you are
• You’re passionate and thoughtful about building systems that enhance human understanding.
• You have 2-4 years of professional experience designing, creating and maintaining scalable data pipelines.
• You’ve wrangled enough data to understand how often the complex systems that produce data can go wrong.
• You can write clear, correct code in at least one programming language, and are willing to become effective in others as needed to get your job done.
• You are highly effective with SQL and understand how to write and tune complex queries.
• You communicate with clarity and precision in written form; experience communicating with graphs and plots, or at least understanding how to enable other people to do this, is a big bonus.

What you’ll do as a Data Engineer:
• Build software and data engineering expertise and own data quality for our processes

• Professional experience at the intersection one or more cloud platforms and feature delivery of complex systems
• Proficiency with at least one of the following languages: Java, Python, C#.
• Experience with Amazon AWS services (Terraform, Redshift, SQS, Kinesis, DynamoDB, RDS, etc.)
• Proficiency in SQL. Ability to perform complex data analysis and modeling with large volumes of data
• Experience with Big Data technologies, e.g., Hadoop, Spark
• Experience with airflow development, deployment, and workflow management
• Handson experience working in largescale data environments which included realtime and/or batch processing requirements
• Handson experience building realtime or near realtime data pipelines is a big plus
• Experience creating software in highlyregulated environments is also a big plus
• Patience with how the environment is, with an eye towards refactoring the environment into what it should be
• An ability to win friends and influence people on both the technology and business sides
• Clear and concise communication skills
• Bias towards action, an ability to work autonomously while navigating uncertainty with good humor
• Empathy for our clients and stakeholders on both the technology and business side
• A positive, enthusiastic attitude and the ambition to tackle challenging issues
