The Position

Smart Eye’s Cabin Monitoring team is looking for an experienced Software Engineer who is interested in developing their computer vision and machine learning experience. The ideal candidate will contribute ideas and can then execute these effectively and efficiently. They are excited by the idea of learning new concepts ranging from embedded integration, computer vision, and machine learning.

The Cabin Monitoring team is developing features to understand the state of the car interior and the people in it, using the latest machine learning techniques. This team is building key functionality of our next-generation Automotive Interior Sensing product – novel technology that will significantly improve road safety and will transform our transportation experiences.

We are building safety features such as detection of left-behind children and pets, and people’s seating locations in a vehicle as well as features that enhance comfort, wellness, and entertainment by detecting occupants’ mood, emotions, and reactions. Development activities range from early-stage prototyping to porting and deployment to a wide set of automotive embedded platforms.

Responsibilities:

Develop and improve logic within Smart Eye’s C++ codebase for its Cabin Monitoring and Interior Sensing solutions.
Create and enhance features using computer vision and a variety of machine learning methods (detection, classification, temporal ML, activity/gesture recognition)
Build and deploy the SDK on different platforms – including optimizing the SDK runtime on automotive-grade SoCs. (System on Chips)
Investigate tradeoffs between accuracy and computational efficiency for edge/embedded environments and propose solutions to meet run-time requirements.
Develop and maintain KPI reports to measure and analyze model and feature performance.
Contribute as a global team member of the Automotive team using agile methodologies.

Requirements & Qualifications:

Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field or equivalent experience.
2+ years of software development experience.
1+ years of work experience in C++ and Python development.
Familiarity with computer vision and machine learning concepts: deep learning, data science, statistics, 3D geometry.
Experience with CI/CD. (Continuous Integration and Deployment)
Experience with working on embedded SoCs.
Strong communication and team collaboration skills.

Optional Qualification (Nice to Have):

Introductory-level experience using deep learning frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow/Keras, PyTorch) and data science libraries. (e.g. Pandas, scikit-learn, matplotlib)
Experience with cross-compiling for aarch64 and armv7 on Android and Linux.
Experience using end-to-end development (design, planning, evaluation, deployment) of a machine learning based system.
Experience in the automotive industry.

The Role:

Improvements to the Dronut’s autonomous capabilities are critical to unlocking this technology’s full potential.

You will be driving this effort and working closely with our controls and autonomy engineering teams, and you will also have the opportunity to work with some of our customers.

You will be improving our existing Autopilot stack and laying the groundwork for full autonomy in GPS denied and complex environments.

Responsibilities:

Design and implementation of real-time estimation, mapping, tracking and localization algorithms and testing in real environments

Fusion of multiple sensors including IMUs, monocular and stereo cameras, LiDAR, and rangefinders such as time of flight and sonar

Generating 2D and 3D maps in real time

Design of a robust state estimation such as Extended Kalman Filter as well as sensor fusion algorithms such as Visual Inertial Odometry

Collaborating with various members of the team, and interacting with customers

Requirements

BS or MS in Computer Science, Robotics, Aerospace Engineering, or a similar field with 2+ years of experience

Industry experience with implementing perception, planning, filtering and state estimation algorithms for autonomous systems

Experience with real-time sensor fusion (e.g. IMU, LiDAR, SLAM, odometry, sonar)

Prior experience with optimization for computationally constrained edge computing devices and building perception pipelines using ROS, C/C++, OpenCV and/or CUDA

Solid software engineering foundation with a proficiency in C++, Python and Matlab among other languages, and the ability to write clean and easy to understand code

Strong foundation in mathematics and fundamentals (3D geometry, linear algebra, quaternions)

Deep understanding of kinematics, dynamics and equations of motion for systems

Experience in calibration and signal processing of motion sensors and intrinsic parameters

Bonus Points for:

Experience with implementing robotic control algorithms

Experience with obstacle detection and avoidance, object tracking and path planning algorithms

Experience with development on embedded systems

Internship: 6D pose estimation for machine vision at Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs

Location: Cambridge

The Computer Vision group at MERL, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America, is seeking a highly skilled graduate student for an internship position for Online Pose Estimation of vehicles using machine vision. The research work is expected to be deployed in real-world applications such as vehicle range and pose detection. Candidates should have advanced knowledge of full-6D pose estimation from stereo imaging using both Machine Learning and geometric approaches, point cloud processing using ML and computational geometry. Exceptional programming skills are required, including ROS, C++ and Python. The expected start date is Sep/Oct 2022 and the duration of the internship is 6 months.
