Tesla is seeking an experienced Machine Vision System Engineer to apply their experience in Machine Vision Inspection Systems to cutting-edge manufacturing equipment and high-speed manufacturing processes. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to Tesla’s cutting-edge battery cell manufacturing line and to apply innovative automation solutions to equipment for manufacturing of Tesla batteries.

This role will invent, develop, scale up and optimize Machine Vision Inspection Systems and methods for battery manufacturing within a cross-functional engineering team. In this role, you will work closely with many organizations both internal and external to Tesla, taking new battery designs from initial concept through into full production.

The battery cell is a critical component in Tesla vehicles and storage systems. This role will have the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to our products. The work environment is demanding, fast-paced and incredibly exciting. What You’ll Do
• Work as key link between cross functional teams to develop requirements and provide solutions for inline vision inspection systems
• Drive ramp of exciting new products by characterizing baseline vision performance and capability and improve performance as measured by product quality and tool availability
• Ensure manufacturing lines meet uptime, availability, and reliability metrics – OEE, cycle time and quality, have the sense of urgency on resolution of production issues
• Develop best practices to improve vision system reliability (e.g., process discipline, recipe version control, hard drive backup)
• Vision software and algorithm development and data analysis using programming languages such as C++, C#, Python or HALCON
• Commissioning and calibrating vision systems
• Commissioning PLC and MES system integration
• Organize cross-functional design reviews and highlight body of work
• Collaboration with downstream and upstream process teams on vision system validation, data correlation and analysis
• Build request for quotation and manage vendor proposals
• Provide direction and mentorship to third party vendors and Tesla Internal machine building teams

What You’ll Bring
• BS, MS, or PhD in physics, mechanical, electrical, computer science or

another engineering discipline, with 2 to 5 years of Machine Vision Systems. experience in automation equipment
• Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development
• Knowledge in selection of cameras, lenses, optics, lighting, and other hardware for image capture and processing
• Knowledge of camera calibration (e.g., pinhole camera model, lens distortion, Intrinsic and Extrinsic Camera Parameters, multi-camera geometry, MTF of imaging system)
• Experience of image processing (e.g., image enhancement, thresholding, morphology, feature extraction, classification)
• Familiarity with optical benches and capability of building testbed for component testing or proof-of-concept
• Strong analytical, mathematical, and statistical background and ability to understand and explain theory behind vision system algorithms
• Experience in high volume manufacturing is highly desired
• Experience in other optical metrology sensors (e.g., chromatic confocal, laser triangulation, UV/IR imaging) is highly desired
• Experience with linescan cameras is a highly desired

About the Role:

Our Perception teams are responsible for developing perception algorithms to detect and perceive objects for Torc’s autonomous driving systems, allowing the system to understand and react to the environment around the vehicle in real-time. Perception team members create software to utilize algorithms that use sensor data from LiDAR, RADAR, and cameras to detect, classify, segment, and detect, and track obstacles in the vehicle’s surrounding environment. Perception software utilizes 3D point cloud data from LiDAR and objects detected in radar returns to create a situational awareness for our behaviors and path planning teams to make vehicle decisions to navigate safety. We work closely with other engineering teams in behavior and motion planning to create innovative solutions for our Level 4 autonomous system.

In this role engineers are responsible for various software development and engineering activities supporting the delivery of autonomy algorithm software to the overall system solution within Perception area utilizing computer vision and machine learning techniques and skill set.

Responsibilities:
• Responsible for executing full software development lifecycle activities using primarily C++ skills in Linux development environment using Lean-Agile methodologies
• Responsible to complete software assignments including but not limited to software design, implementation, unit testing, vehicle testing and deployed software maintenance.
• Assist in root cause analysis of issues found in vehicle testing
• Support team in identifying daily assignments and reporting progress at daily stand ups.
• Support software and system level test plans and verification strategies to support ongoing feature development and bug fixes.
• Responsible to ensure software updates do not regress the software performance by utilizing simulation software and scenarios.
• Update simulation software and scenarios for new features or situations encountered in testing software

Minimum Technical Skills and Qualifications
